The Oxford dictionary defines “Mortality” as, and I quote, (1) “The state of being subject to death.” Or (2) “Death, especially on a large scale”.)
I always presumed that it was “the desire or ability to live forever”. So naturally you can understand my surprise upon learning that for sixty-seven years I was misinformed.
I do know that we all desire to live beyond our wildest dreams. Being able to witness eons of culture and mankind’s existence. The proverbial “life eternal.”
The scientific mind would debate the fallacies of eternal existence. Arguing that to do so would eventually lead to over population and thus the destruction of our species. A fact that cannot be ignored.
The religious scholar teach us to believe that we do live for eternity. Not as a physical being, though. They lead us to believe that upon death we will transcend to “Heaven” or, perhaps, “Hades”. Regardless, it shall be life eternal. Either in the smoking torment of the fires of Hell or in the glorious Light of Heaven.
Some religions hold the belief of reincarnation. Their faith teaches that we may return in the form of an animal or any of the many other living lifeform.
However, no matter what your belief you will not know that you have ascended. Past lives become deleted from your conscious memory.
Which leaves me to query ……
“What would be the logic in this?”
If we are to be unaware of our previous existence how would we know that we were now living life eternal?
The whole concept makes no sense to me. There is no logic in returning if not to remember lives.
What if it they are right though?
I cannot imagine how bored one would become after a millennium of strolling through time.
One can only take in so much knowledge before they would become “A know it all.” All seeing. All knowing. The wise man of the crowd.
Each and every one of us would be the same. A society completely comprised of sheeple. Each of equal wisdom and character.
These sheeple would have no ability to learn new things after living for such a long time. They would already have learned all to be learned.
There would be no one who could teach to you new things because you would have already have been taught what there was to be learned in your previous lives.
One would expect that there would be an exception to the rule. A solitary soul that came back with all their previous lives still vivid in their memories.
If so, would they be believed?
I strongly doubt they would be. I hold the belief that if such person attempted to enlighten us about the life eternal they would not be taken seriously.
Chances are they would be diagnosed with mental health issues. More than likely heavily medicated and labelled as a delusional schizophrenic or something similar.
We do have locked away in psychiatric facilities numerous souls who do remember having previous existences.
Sadly, due to man’s instinctive fear of the unknown and the prejudices that accompany it, we would refuse to accept, let alone believe, that there was the possibility of truth in their words.
We could spend days discussing mortality and still be left dazed, confused and clueless to any factual justifications.
The topic is one that has been questioned for millennia after millennia and will continue to be debated.
Heaven, Purgatory or Hell.
Angels or Demons.
The eternal unanswered question.
As for me, I will live life eternal.
In the hearts and minds of those who love me true.
My voice forever travelling the static lines of the world wide web.
My life, loves and fallacies forever imprinted upon the pages of my books.
Am I a believer?
To answer that I would have to have proof of either life eternal or life lived once.
