What I am about to tell you can best be described as a a lengthy essay on the consequences of truths dared.
Although most will deny it, we humans are liars by nature.
People lie!
Often to cover up a shame or to escape blame.
Other times we speak untruths for no other reason but to deceive the listener.
The most common lie we automatically will speak is ,
“I am fine.”
This is our automatic response ninety percent of the time when someone asks us,
“How are you doing?”
(You know that what I am saying is truth.)
“Why do we do it so easily?”
“Are we deceitful by nature?”
“Or is it an instinctual protective mechanism?”
For instance,
“If your relationship is in peril or disarray and a coworker asks you how your family is doing, you are not going to tell them the truth.”
“You will automatically use the generic response that all is well in your private life.”
The reason we do so lies within the response of two simple words, “Private life”.
Perhaps we are genetically engineered to mask any truths that may portray a weakness.
This is apparent when it comes to matters of a personal nature or family business.
Are we automatically wired to conceal not only hardships, but also windfalls?
We conceal hardships out of the fear of embarrassment or the fear of being misjudged.
However, we also conceal winfalls.
Perhaps out of the fear of being jealously judged.
Or out of fear of someone possibly robbing us of our newly acquired winfall.
Why are we wired to automatically be on the defensive?
The answer goes back to the beginnings of humanity.
Since humanity’s conception we have had to fear strangers, mistrust acquaintances and on occasion doubt family members.
Oddly, this has not changed in centuries.
“Why?”
Because the core of our personal protective systems are forever on the defensive.
Defending against any possible ploy of deception from our fellow man.
What a dark trait to have to bear and live by.
Even after millenniums of existence, deceptions are still a necessity for survival.
Most definitely a consequence of life’s truths dared.
The more we dare to be truthful the greater the consequences.
As well, the more we dare to be untruthful the greater the consequences.
Are all consequences negative?
I think not.
At times the consequence arrives with rewards attached.
For instance …
Withholding a lottery win from strangers may very well save you from harm.
On the flipside …
Revealing and sharing the same lottery win with family may assure safety by numbers.
All truths come with consequences.
All untruths come with consequences.
That does not mean to say that those consequences are bad.
There are “good” (for lack of a better term) consequences. They come with rewards.
Whereas the “bad” consequences are accompanied by punishments tailored to fit the situation at hand.
Perhaps there will come a time where it will no longer be necessary for us to have to automatically be deceitful with each other.
Perhaps there will come a time when pigs can fly!
Sadly, I hold little faith in mankind’s ability to create a society that is free of deceit, disbeliefs, bigotry, violence and the numerous other dark sides of mankind.
In the big picture of existence we are still a young species.
Toddlers in this space/time continuum.
Adding to man’s many faults is that we are trying to wear our “Big Boy” pants over our diapers.
We have no parental guidance to teach us which path to walk.
We are plagued to learn on the fly.
No one to change our diapers and, believe me, many of us need a diaper change.
How many people do you know that are full of crap and haven’t the sense to grab some Huggies or some Pampers?
To sum things up, all I can say is that mankind’s vision of itself is not it’s true portrayal.
We are liars by necessity.
We lie to each other, even when not necessary.
We lie to ourselves because it is necessary.
I fear for the direction this society we have created is heading.
It seems to me that our greed and our readiness to display dishonesty over obvious truths will cause us to return to the dark ages once again.
We are on a wild ‘Nantucket sleigh ride’ and this whale we have harpooned is soon to pull us down into the murky depths of the cesspool of life.
And that my friends will be the consequence of the truths we have dared to lie about.
